BROOKINGS — Applications are now being accepted for the South Dakota State University Extension Master Gardener and Home Horticulture training course.
SDSU Extension’s Master Gardener program helps gardening enthusiasts become expert volunteers. Once certified, Master Gardeners can host community programs and workshops to provide research-based information to their communities. Applications for this year’s training course are due March 10.
“Master Gardeners are out in their communities, helping us spread the word about tested, research-based gardening information,” said Prairey Walkling, SDSU Extension master gardener field specialist. “They are our proverbial ‘boots on the ground’ to help people succeed in their gardening adventures.”
A mix of online and in-person instruction, the training course is open from April 1 to July 31 for adults interested in learning more about flowers, plants, lawns and landscapes. Understanding of plants is helpful, but there are no course prerequisites.
The course focuses on plant care with training in various topics ranging from plant identification to soil health, in order to provide a comprehensive look at what helps lawns and gardens to thrive.
Trainees must attend two in-person trainings to pass.
There will be in-person training on April 8 and June 17 in Rapid City, April 10 and June 12 in Aberdeen, and April 11 and June 13 in Madison, with a full and half-day at each location. Training times and locations will be provided after registration.
Online courses are weekly live 90-minute webinar sessions starting at 6 p.m. MT/7 p.m. CST every Thursday from April 18 through June 27. Trainees must attend at least 80% of the online webinars to pass the course. Participants must also pass a final test, which will be available online in July.
New participants may register for $250 or $500, depending on the registration type. Current SDSU Extension master gardeners may take the course for free or purchase an updated manual for $80.
SDSU Extension Master Gardener is part of the national Cooperative Extension Master Gardener program network, one of the largest volunteer organizations in the country with more than 86,000 volunteers across 49 states.
