Hot Day, Cool Cars

Posted

Saturday, July 13th was a sweltering, overcast day. The heat index had risen to 96 degrees by 3 p.m. However, the heat did not prevent the 9th annual Redfield Auto Value Car Show from taking place.

Mario Hansen said “For the heat and stuff, we had a tremendous number of different vehicles.” He was still pleased with the turnout.

Hansen and Dwight Guthmiller of Aberdeen started the car show back in 2015. Last year, Guthmiller stepped down as co-coordinator, and Criss Rohrbach took his place. While Hansen stated that he intends to keep doing it as long as he is able to, Rohrbach said that his goal for next year was “To do absolutely everything, so Mario just had to show up.”

A variety of vehicles lined up along the northern part of the recreation area. Cars, pick-ups, tractors, and trucks were shown. Auto enthusiasts wandered around to look at all of the entrants. Hansen remarked on the variety. “That’s what brings people. One guy said ‘There’s car shows, then there’s the Redfield car show.’ We always have the most unique cars.

Many of those who entered had a nostalgic connection to their vehicle. Perhaps they had grown up with it as the family vehicle, or it was their first kind of car, or it was one that they’d always dreamed of owning.

Despite being hot, entrants and spectators showed enjoyment during the event. Free water and ice cream were available. People of all ages came to the event.

Vehicles could be enter into many competition categories. Each category had 3 winners. Some people won in multiple categories. The voting for the winners was done by participants.

While most participants couldn’t choose one for a favorite, Rohrbach liked Marion Moeller’s red ’21 Corvette. This car was an award-winning one. Many people admired it.

Matt Halbkat said “I’m pretty tickled about winning the Mayor’s Choice.” This award was simply given to the one that Mayor Frank Schwartz liked the best. Halbkat had a brightly painted ’70 pickup.

Hansen, Guthmiller, and Rohrbach all declared the event a success. Guthmiller gave special thanks to KQKD radio for being on hand to dj and to broadcast. He also thanked the Redfield street department for preparing the grounds for the event.
