Norbert John Miles was born on November 6, 1926, to John and Bertha (Seagreen) Miles at their farm home near Turton, SD. He was nicknamed “Tip" by an Irish cattle buyer when he was eight years old and has been known by that name since that time. He attended elementary school in a one-room country school near their rural home. He graduated from Doland High School in 1944 and served in the United States Army in World War II, from February 1945 to December 1946, when he received his Honorable Discharge. He served overseas in Luzon and Japan for 14 months. He attended South Dakota State University for one year and then farmed with his father.

Tip married Alyce Paul, on June 25, 1953, and to this union five children were born, Karin, Paula, Kelly, Kevin and Timothy. They farmed at Turton until 1956 when they moved into Doland and he took a job as a Territorial Manager for Northrup, King and Co. out of Minneapolis, traveling the north half of South Dakota for the next ten years. In 1965 he bought The Times-Record, a weekly newspaper in Doland and The Conde News, a weekly newspaper of Conde in 1968. He and Alyce published these two newspapers for thirty years, retiring in 1995. While owning the newspapers, Tip worked for 15 years at the South Dakota Developmental Center in Redfield.

Tip was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Doland, the Knights of Columbus Council NO 820, a Fourth-Degree member of 1079 Assembly of Aberdeen, a life member of the American Legion Post 69 of Doland, and the Miles-Davis-Fortin VFW Post of Turton, and a member of the South Dakota Press Association for 30 years. He served as Chairman of the Spink County Democrats from 1960 to 1964; as President and Director of Glacial Lakes & Prairie Tourism Association of Watertown and served a two-year term on the Small Business Advisory Board, an appointment by Senator George McGovern.

Tip loved to hunt pheasants, watch his favorite sports teams – Notre Dame football, the Green Bay Packers and the St. Louis Cardinals; proud to be a staunch Democrat, and could always be found listening to classical music. But most of all, the love of his life was his fifteen grandchildren.

He is survived by his three daughters, Karin Wiese of Sioux Falls, Paula (Val) Rausch of Big Stone City, and Kelly Remily of Rapid City; two sons, Kevin (Shannon) Miles of Sioux Falls and Timothy (Kari) Miles of San Jose, CA; grandchildren Amber (John), Brittany, and Erin (Josh); Miles, Bryce (Lindsey), Molly (Patrick), and Brenna (Ben); Dirk (Erin) and Ethan; Moriah, Keegan (Maris), Caelan, and Sean; Ava and Gabe; and 16 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Anna Lou Miles of Round Hill, VA and Ann Miles of Turton, SD.

Preceding him in death were his wife, parents; three sisters, Zita Mary, Margaret Elaine, Dorothy Nelson; three brothers, Richard (Dorothy) Miles, Quentin (Lila) Miles, Donald Miles and Jerome Miles; and a son-in-law, Dr. Allan Wiese.
