SDDC celebrated its centennial in Redfield on Friday, July 21, 2017. Many SDDC staff dressed up in outfits from the early nineteen hundreds and enjoyed a meal with SDDC residents and visitors. Relics from the past were also on display at the SDDC Administrative Building in celebration of SDDC's Centennial.
Originally established by the state legislature in 1899, the center opened in 1902 as the Northern Hospital for the Insane. It wasn't until 1989, after going through several name-changes, that the South Dakota Developmental Center settled on its current name.
Today, the the South Dakota Developmental Center is located on a state-owned 90-acre campus and houses more than 100 individuals.
