Mary Ann Pinard always had to have things just so, and in knowing that, this will not do her justice. Nevertheless, we will make a heartfelt attempt.
Mary Ann was born June 2, 1937, to Alvira and Emery Shantz in Redfield, SD. She was a mother hen to her five brothers and helped her teacher grade papers in the one-room schoolhouse she attended and graduated from (in Athol, SD). She moved to Colorado briefly, returning to Redfield to work in the Treasurer's Office in the Spink County Courthouse. In the middle of a blizzard in 1959, she married Monty Pinard and in later years, worked alongside him in his dental practice. The couple had three children: Monty Jr., Michelle, and Denise. They lived happily in Redfield for decades, often traveling the country in their various RV’s throughout the years.
Mary Ann was a true master of the domestic arts. Her home was (and still is) immaculately clean and filled with piano and violin music, and the delicious food she made always had to be piping hot. She made chokecherry jelly from the bushes in her yard. She sewed Halloween costumes for her granddaughter Anna, whom she also taught to garden. She single-handedly kept the sticky note industry afloat because “if it’s not written down, I’ll forget it.” She did crossword puzzles, delighted in a rousing game of Scattegories, and fell asleep during movies. She loved a good party accompanied by a vodka water. Mary Ann took pride in her appearance and was never caught in public without being fully “put together” as she put it (hair, makeup, and jewelry in place).
Mary Ann loved and lived her best life, including her family (particularly her four grandchildren). She passed away on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, and though she will be dearly missed, we celebrate her time here on earth and the memories we created with her.
Mary Ann is preceded in death by Alvira and Emery Shantz, Monty Pinard Sr., Monty Pinard Jr., Loren Shantz, and Terry Shantz.
She is survived by friends and family who love her very much including Jerry and Marlene Shantz, Paul and GleeAnn Shantz, David Shantz, Michelle Burleson and Pat Wieseler, Denise Pinard-Montgomery and Douglas Montgomery, Anna Burleson and Jacob Scholl, Celeste, Philomena, Francis and Nicholas Pinard, as well as many nieces, nephews, and several beauticians.
