On Monday, March 10th, local agricultural businesses celebrated National Ag Day. National Ag Day is about recognizing the contribution of agriculture in our everyday lives. This day aims to highlight the importance of agriculture in feeding the world, supporting rural communities and sustaining the environment. The local Redfield FFA chapter and students enrolled in agriculture classes helped students plant watermelon and cantaloupe seeds. Jr Kindergarten through 5th grade students participated in this activity and planted over 240 pots. All the kids, both older and younger, showed enthusiasm and excitement as they planted their seeds. We are hoping for a plentiful harvest of melons this summer! The Elementary kids also participated in a coloring contest held in the last few weeks in February and third and fourth graders submitted short essays about what farming means to them. Thank you to all the kids for sharing their talents and creativity!
Our sponsors: Precision Soil, Agtegra, RDO, Wilbur Ellis, Malpert Insurance, Redfield Energy, Proven Ag, Osborn Agency/Modern Woodmen, Farm Credit Services of America (FCSA), Hub International, FSA Office-Spink County, NRCS-Spink County, Heartland State Bank, SD Corn, Appel's, Grow Spink, Odland Construction, Siebrecht Tree Moving, Kimlicka Construction, Dakota Directional, Kranz Custom Grinding, Akin Trucking & Cody Stoner Trucking contributed to helping serve Jr. Kindergarten through 12th grade, teachers and staff.
Over 40 volunteers made an appearance this year, 22 sponsors, 48 gallons of SDSU ice cream, 630 burgers, 50 dozen buns and 5 gallons of pickles. We look forward to giving back to our community every year on National Ag Day. Until next year, we hope you have a pleasant calving season, happy planting, and a bountiful harvest.
