“Staying ready, staying mentally prepared, and not doing any dumb moves or anything, and (being) technically sound.” This is what Redfield senior wrestler, Grady Fey, commented when asked about his philosophy for this year in wrestling. And get it done is just what he did. Grady finished his five-year crusade at the state wrestling tournament to place in the top spot of his weight class with a First Place Finish at 285 over Canton's Traun Cook.
In his quest, Grady placed 8th in the state as an eighth-grader, failed to place as a freshman, 2nd place as a sophomore, and 2nd place last year when he was defeated by Traun Cook of Canton.
In this years tournament, Grady pinned Aiden Novak from Mount Vernon /Plankinton/Corsica Stickney in 17 seconds in his first round. In his next round, the quarterfinals, Grady again pinned his opponent—Emmitt Maher of Lemmon/McIntosh—this time in 1 minute and 22 seconds. In the semi-finals, Grady won by major decision over Isaac Nehlich from Tri-Valley by a score of 11 to 2. In his final match--the 1st Place Match and featured match of the Class B finals--Grady won by fall over Traun Cook of Canton in 2 minutes 19 seconds.
When asked about his athletic ventures as a Pheasant Fey commented “I’m just grateful for everyone that has come back to help the program and help everyone out,” Fey said. “It’s something that not a lot of towns get to experience. I’m grateful for everything that has been available to me here, and it’s really nice to be from a wrestling town.”
After graduation, Fey plans on furthering his wrestling career to the collegiate level at NSU where he plans on obtaining a Business Administration degree and eventually returning to the family farm to take over operations there.
