Elsie Linea (Swanson) Miller, 108, of Redfield, SD, passed away Monday, November 11th, 2024, at the Eastern Star Home in Redfield.
Visitation, with family present, will be from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 17th, at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield. A prayer service and time of sharing will begin at 5:00 p.m.
Elsie’s funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 18th, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Redfield. Pastor Joy Proper will officiate. Burial will take place at Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield. Lunch and fellowship will follow in the church hall.

Elsie was born on a farm 6 miles east of Redfield to Axel and Hilda (Johnson) Swanson on May 1st, 1916. She joined a family of 3 sisters. At age 2, she moved with her family and a new 8-day old baby sister to a farm north of Frankfort, SD, in Harmony Township. The family was joined by a baby boy in 1923.
Elsie attended country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Frankfort High School in 1934.
Elsie worked for relatives and neighbors doing housework for several years.
She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church and taught Sunday school for several years.
Elsie was united in marriage with Norman Miller in the Lutheran Parsonage on October 10th, 1940. They lived on a farm southeast of Redfield in Crandon Township and in 1943, they moved to a farm north of Frankfort.
They were blessed with 3 children: Roger, Dennis, and Linea.
Norman passed away in 1963. Elsie remained on the farm until 1978 when she moved to Redfield.
In 1967, she started working at the James Valley Nursing Home in Redfield and continued for thirty-five and a half years, retiring at the age of 87.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, crossword and number puzzles, crocheting, and knitting. She was known by her grandchildren for her Swedish buttermilk pancakes.
Grateful for sharing her life are her children: Roger (Cheryl) Miller of Silt, CO, Linea (Larry) Schoenhard of Chamberlain, SD, and daughter-in-law, Peggy Miller of Frankfort, SD. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Darrow (Laurie) Miller, Sherri (Bryan ‘Doc’ Dexter) Miller, Denee (Eric) Berhalter, Ryder (Dina) Miller, Dawn (Brad) Englund, Dustin Miller, Nikki (Matt) Rogers, Angela (Anthony) Mercado, Steve (Annie) Schoenhard, and Ryan (Holly) Schoenhard; 21 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, her parents, her son, Dennis, her grandson, Jayde Miller, and her siblings: Hilma Swanson, Mildred Wilford, Esther Breford, Hilda DeYoung, and Carl Swanson.
