September 12, 2019 - Based on September 1 conditions, South Dakota's 2019 corn crop is forecast at 626 million bushels, down 20 percent from last year's production, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Acreage harvested for grain is estimated at 4.01 million acres, down 17 percent from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 156 bushels per acre, down 4 bushels from last year.
Soybean production is forecast at 152 million bushels, down 41 percent from last year. Acres for harvest, at 3.46 million acres, is down 38 percent from 2018. Yield is forecast at 44 bushels per acre, down 2 bushels from last year.
Sorghum production is forecast at 14.1 million bushels, down 12 percent from last year. Area for harvest, at 170,000 acres, is 15 percent below 2018. Yield is forecast at 83 bushels per acre, up 3 bushels from last year.
Dry edible pea production is forecast at 390,000 cwt, down 2 percent from a year ago. Area for harvest, at 15,000 acres, is down 21 percent from 2018. Yield is forecast at 2,600 pounds per acre, up 500 pounds from last year.
