RHS Journalism students win numerous awards

RHS journalism staff members received 23 total awards at the South Dakota High School Press Convention in Brookings on Wednesday, April 5. Fourteen RHS students and adviser Mrs. Kaylin Frost attended the Press Convention, which was held at the Days Inn convention center, where they participated in workshop sessions and received awards for yearbook and newspaper. Both the yearbook and newspaper received an Excellent rating. Individual awards included: Journalistic Photography – Eve Millar, 1st Place; On-the-Spot Headline Contest – David Kastner, 1st Place; Editorial Contest – Hailey Wacholz, 3rd place; Sports Photography: Alexis Esser (Superior), Eve Millar (Superior), and Sydney Smith (Superior); School Activity Photography: Hailey Wacholz (Superior), Kesha Arthurs (Superior), and Carter Wegner (Superior); Newswriting for Sports: Conner Jessen (Excellent), Kesha Arthurs (Excellent), Carter Wegner (Superior); Newswriting for Editorials: Chris Shine (Excellent), Trista Frost (Superior) , and Hailey Wacholz (Superior); Newswriting for Feature Stories: Alexis Esser (Superior), Sydney Smith & Abby Fehlman (Excellent), and Hannah Komraus (Superior); Newswriting for General News: Olivia Shantz (Superior), Trista Frost (Superior), and Chris Shine (Superior). “I am very proud of our journalism program and the staff who work to put out a quality yearbook and newspaper for our school. These kids have put time and effort into our publications, and the awards they brought home are proof of the talent these young people have in writing and photography,” Mrs. Frost said.
