Redfield SADD members participate in Red Ribbon Week

By Lola Miner

Redfield Public School’s SADD is participating in a nationwide campaign funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration entitled “Your future is key so stay drug free.”  The original Red Ribbon campaign was created in honor of U.S. Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camerena, who was kidnapped and killed after uncovering a multibillion-dollar drug ring in Mexico. Red Ribbon Week celebrates the memory of a special man who gave his life in the right to keep Americans safe from drugs. We support his efforts by wearing a red ribbon to symbolize our commitment to living drug-free. The week’s activities aim to raise awareness of the many problems related to the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.

“I am excited to chair the Red Ribbon Week committee this year,” says Lola Miner. “We have many great things planned in our school and community. October 23-27, we will be dressing up each day with a different theme. SADD students will sponsor a Grim Reaper Day where students will represent the 65 people in South Dakota who died in 2015 from drug-related causes. Students will also be decorating a portion of the school in red and decorating lockers with anti-drug messages. Downtown Redfield will be decorated with red ribbons along the street to bring awareness.”

What can YOU do?

  • Support local drug resistance education programs in schools and businesses.
  • Remind your friends and family that recognizing drug abuse often begins at home
  • Support this and other SADD sponsored initiatives!
