Danielle Nowell, daughter of Josh and Kasey Nowell, was crowned the new Miss SD State Fair Outstanding Teen on Saturday, August 31st at the Miss State Fair Scholarship Competition on the S.D. State Fairgrounds.

Nowell, 14, a freshman at Hitchcock-Tulare High School, performed the vocal solo “Cups” ( also known as “You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone”) from the movie Pitch Perfect for her talent at the S.D. State Fair. Her platform is titled “Firm Foundation,” and focuses on encouraging kids to form strong connections with older generations in their family.

“The idea is connecting with members of your family and creating a foundation so that kids feel like they have a sense of where they are in the world and their place in it,” said Danielle’s mother, Kasey.

“She loves family history. She has spent time with her grandparents and learned a lot about family history.”

According to Kasey, Danielle seemed a little bit surprised to win the Miss State Fair Outstanding Teen title.

“There was some good competition down there,” she said. “She has been in a few of these competitions now, so it is rewarding to see that hard work pay off.”

According to her mother, this was her fifth preliminary competition. Last year was her first time competing at the state level. During the pageant at the S.D. State Fair, she earned a $150 scholarship and a floral bouquet along with a chance to compete in her second state pageant.

Nowell will compete at the state competition May 28th-30th, 2020 at the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center on the SDSU campus in Brookings.
