New Spink County Law Enforcement Center to be completed in August of 2019

With plans to have the new Spink County Law Enforcement Center in Redfield finished in August of 2019, Kyburz-Carlson Construction has been working hard this winter. The tall cement walls of the new Center can be viewed from the outside, and the inside of the Center can currently be viewed from the windows of the Spink County Courthouse's Jury Room.

The Center will not be a jail, as often misconstrued, but will house three temporary holding cells for overnight purposes. The Center will also have a waiting room; booking room; four-car Sally Port; evidence room; conference room; deputy work area; offices for deputies, sheriff, dispatch and emergency management; interview room; observation room; break room; and restrooms.
Currently, the project's cost sits at $2,222,269 along with additional costs of about $300,000.
"We bid out the project and there are additional costs on top of it that aren't in the contract with that  construction manager," said Spink County Auditor, Theresa Hodges."So the total project cost is around two point five million."
$1,500,000 of the total project cost has been funded through American Bank and Trust in Mellette with a bond purchase. The remainder of the cost is being paid for with cash on hand, according to Hodges.
"It will be a secure facility. You are not going to walk into the offices like we have here right now," said Krumm."It is going to take a while to move everything over, and then some of these offices will be utilized for storage."
One noticeable deviation from the original computer-animated rendition of the Center is the omission of a glass walkway connecting the Center to the Spink County Court House.
"There will be an entryway from the Law Enforcement Center into the basement, the current first floor," said Hodges.
At present, the law enforcement department at the Spink County courthouse consists of six deputies, Sheriff Krumm, and five full-time dispatchers. They are in the process of hiring two more deputies and are looking for part-time dispatchers as well.
