Lyle Michels, 88, of Redfield, SD, passed away with family at his side on Monday, July 25, 2022, at Avantara-Redfield. 

Lyle’s memorial service will be at Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 1, 2022.  Pastor Melissa Rowenhorst will officiate.    Visitation, with family present, will begin at 10:00 a.m. before the memorial service.  

Following the memorial service, burial with military honors will take place in the Rockham Grace Cemetery in Rockham, SD.  Lunch and fellowship will follow the burial at Leo’s Good Food in Redfield.

Joseph Lyle Michels, son of Joe and Pearl (Yada) Michels,  was born on September 12, 1933, in Rockham, SD. He graduated from Redfield High School in 1951.  He married Shirley Smith in California and they were blessed with four children, Sandy, Rick, Patti, and Cherie.

He served in the United States Marine Corps from May 1951  to June 1952 aboard the U.S.S. Los Angeles during the Korean War.

In 1954, he returned to the Michels family farm in Rockham and raised his family.  Upon leaving the farm, he worked at the Redfield Livestock Auction for 30 years.  After retiring, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, canning, feeding his birds and squirrels, and going for drives in the country.   He also enjoyed watching Twins baseball, football, golfing, and having coffee with his friends at One Stop.

Lyle was a proud Grandpa and enjoyed his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and new great-great-grandchildren.  He attended many of their sporting events and school activities.

Lyle is survived by his children: Sandy (Doug) Deiter of Faulkton, SD, Rick (Karen Harsh-fiance) of Belle Fourche, SD; Patti (James-deceased) Yennie of Sioux Falls, SD and Cherie (Bill) Buss of Redfield, SD; ten grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, and sister Joyce Wittenhagan of St. Paul, MN.

Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Colleen Hardie, a brother Roger Michels, brother-in-laws Keith Hardie and Red Wittenhagen, and special friends Leroy Stapp and Spud Taylor.
