Kathryn “Kathi” was born April 4, 1958, to Charles and Mary Hurst in Redfield, SD and as it so happened, was born in the car outside of the hospital.  She grew up with her parents, brothers, and sisters on local farms in the Doland, SD area while attending the Doland Public School until her junior year. Her family then moved to Frankfort, SD, and she transferred to Redfield High School and graduated in 1977. She then went on to attend Watertown Business School, and upon graduating she returned to Frankfort and became a true supporter of her small-town community. Kathi enjoyed her years working in Redfield at Community First, Norwest Bank, Little Lambs Preschool, being a rural Mail Carrier, and most recently at the local “Farm Store”.

In her younger years she enjoyed playing softball for Frankfort for many years. Soon a local farm boy caught her eye, and David & Kathi were married on September 27, 1980. She quickly transitioned herself into becoming a supportive farm wife. To this union, 5 children were born and together they raised their family north of Frankfort.

Kathi was a woman of true patience having it be tested daily by her husband, children, and grandchildren throughout her life. She taught her family about hard work, dedication, and to always do the things you love in life. Kathi would always have meals for her family while they were busy working on the farm. She also enjoyed riding along in the rangers, pickups, and anything else that took her on farming or hunting adventures. She would be seen baking bars for local events and always lending a helping hand wherever possible. Kathi’s easy manner and friendly smile made her a popular friend and coworker to many.

Kathi’s devotion to family and particularly her grandchildren was unwavering, and she spent endless hours with them – she knew that the only thing more precious than time, is what she spent it on. Grandma was truly the best caretaker any kid could ever ask for. When not taking care of family and grandkids, she enjoyed playing cards in the Frankfort Pitch League, playing board games, and doing puzzles. Sometimes showing her more adventurous side, she would not hesitate to play the slot machines from time to time.

She is survived by her five children: Natasha Swanson of Conde, SD; Amanda (Dominic) Evans of Redfield, SD; Andrew (Noelle) Swanson; Samantha (Cole) O’Daniel; and Anthony (Kayla) Swanson, all of Frankfort. She will forever be treasured by her 12 grandchildren: Katryn Evans, Peyton O’Daniel, Spencer Evans, Chansey O’Daniel, Stetsen Swanson, Kyler Evans, Corbin Swanson, Isabella Swanson, Ryker Evans, Tate O’Daniel, Karver Swanson, and Slade Swanson.

Kathi is also survived by her brothers Jim and Joe Hurst of Frankfort, SD; sisters Kris Barrie of Turton, SD and Karol (Bob) Artz, Frankfort, SD; and in-laws Duane Swanson of Stockholm, Sweden; Kenny (Penny) Swanson of Redfield, SD; Wesley Swanson of Frankfort; SD; and Karen (Derrick) Walz of Bowdle, SD.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband David Swanson (2014), her parents Charles & Mary Hurst, and her mother- and father-in-law Carl and Ruth (Hukari) Swanson.
