Gordon Albert Geuke, 92, of Zell, SD, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield on Thursday, June 30, 2022

Per Gordon’s wishes, a private family service will be held. Interment with military honors will take place at Greenlawn Cemetery in Redfield, SD.

Gordon was born May 14, 1930, to Albert and Violet (Boyd) Geuke in Redfield, SD, and was the youngest of three children. His mother passed when he was the tender age of 7 months. He and his siblings were raised by their father and Aunt Theresa Geuke on the family farm.

He attended grade school in rural Faulk County and attended St. Mary’s Convent and School in Zell, SD. He then attended Redfield High School for a short time before leaving to help on the family farm. He also served in the National Guard between 1948 to 1950.

On October 10, 1950, he was united in marriage to Betty Ann Backer, and to this union, eight children were born. They farmed the home place until 1957, when, due to drought and hard times, he started working construction.

In 1962 he moved his family into Zell and started his own road construction business. Gordon had a love of airplanes and obtained his private pilots license in 1979. He flew a Piper Cherokee 140 and was on his way to flying a Bonanza when in 1981, due to health reasons, he had to give up flying.

He later took up woodworking and made many cherished items for his family.

Gordon loved his family, especially the new babies being born. He always joked and said, “Look what your mom and I started,” with a smile on his face and a chuckle.

Gordon is survived by his wife Betty of Zell, SD; his children Randy (Nicolle) Geuke of Deadwood, SD; Sandy Stevens of Little Falls, MN; Kevin (Rhonda) Geuke of Redfield, SD; Barb (late Delvin) Sheridan of Redfield, SD; Brian (LaRae) Geuke of Turton, SD; Kim (Les) Taken of Watertown, SD and Becky (Shane) Mins of Belle Fourche, SD. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren, 13 step-great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, five step-great-great-grandchildren, and one son-in-law Joey Gaarsland.

Gordon was preceded in death by his daughter Sharon Gaarsland, three grandchildren, Annette, Alan, and Ladell; three great-grandchildren, Samantha, Triten, and Christopher; and one great-great-grandchild, Xander. He was also preceded in death by his brother Carrol Geuke, sister Ethelene Fliehe and one son-in-law Delvin Sheridan.
