Gertrude (Schmidt) Miller, 89, of Ashton, SD, passed away Sunday, September 18, 2022, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD, due to injuries sustained in an explosion in her home.

Gertrude’s visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 7, at the Aberdeen First Assembly of God in Aberdeen, SD, with Pastor Ben Snyder officiating the funeral service at 3:00 p.m. Please join the family for lunch and fellowship in the church hall after the services. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Ashton Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home of Redfield, SD (www.hykefuneralhome.com).

Gertrude was born February 7, 1933, in Ashley, ND, to John and Lydia (Bertsch) Schmidt. The family moved to a farm near Ashton, where Gertrude attended Ashton Country School. In 1947, she and her family moved to Fontana, CA, where she finished schooling. In December 1951, Theodore Miller went to Fontana, and on the 25th, he and Gertrude were married. On February 13, 1953, a little girl named Lois Gertrude Miller was born.

Gertrude was a charter member of the Redfield Assembly of God Church. She was very active in the church, including being in the Women’s Ministries. She was a member of the Aberdeen First Assembly of God Church. Gertrude also worked for 30 years at the South Dakota Developmental Center in Redfield.

She was famous for her jam-making abilities and enjoyed sharing the fruits of her labors with others. She was an avid crocheter, loved to sew in her early years, and loved to play the piano.

Gertrude is survived by her daughter Lois Miller.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Miller; her parents, Lydia and John Schmidt; and six siblings, that died in infancy.
